So to quickly catch you up if you missed my last video, in May, I ran a little experiment to see if I could grow my Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, by posting short-form videos, and after 14 days, I’d gained a collective 150,000 followers across those platforms, and there are three things I did which I think helped me achieve this. I found strong video ideas by looking at outliers in other people’s content. I wanted to make content around renovations, finance, my cats… so I’d look at other creators in those niches and look for videos they had posted which had done unusually well. What I mean by unusually well is, if they had less than 100,000 followers but had a video that got over 1M views, I’d then take inspiration from that, and make my own version of that video idea. Obviously, long term, you should branch out and try original ideas, but when you’re just getting started and want to know what works within your chosen niche, make things easy for yourself by kicking at open doors. Speaking of kicking at open doors, if a video does well, double down on it. One of the first videos I posted as part of this experiment was a video sharing my favourite features in my tiny house. This video quickly hit 100,000 views when I still only had 10,000 followers, so I doubled down and rapidly put together a few videos about the tiny house. On Instagram, if I’d just stopped with that first ‘favourites’ video, I’d have topped out at 270,000 views… but because I doubled down and made four more videos about the tiny house, I ended up with 8.8 million views across those five videos. When it comes to actually making the content, the most useful thing I learned is that the first few seconds of short-form videos are the most important part. Personally, I had been used to YouTube where you need to pull viewers in with a captivating title and thumbnail, but on these short form platforms, that’s not what grabs people’s attention, it’s the first thing that you say or show. Because of this, I would always start these short videos by saying something interesting, for example…
