I’ve added a few ‘smart home’ products around my house over the years, so here are four that have been worthwhile, and one that hasn’t.
Number one is my solar powered remote controlled windows + blinds from Velux. Being able to control these windows without having to get out the big pole is so much better, plus, they have a built in rain-detector so that if I ever forget to close them and it starts raining, they’ll automatically shut for me.
Number two - appropriately numbered - is my Litter-Robot. Well, it’s not mine, it’s my cats’. The joy of coming home to a clean, empty litter tray really can’t be overstated, so I can highly recommend this one to all cat owners out there.
Number three is my lighting. I’ve filled my house with bulbs from Philips Hue and I love being able to alter the colour, temperature, and brightness with a click, swipe, or voice command.
Number four is my video doorbell. This is not exactly a groundbreaking one, but being able to check who’s at your door and decide if you have the mental fortitude to deal with them is really useful.
Number five is a smart home product I added which I’ve honestly kind of regretted and that is, my remote controlled blinds. For the Velux windows it made sense because they’re hard to reach, but for these blinds, I wish I’d just gone with curtains.
