Why is Khafre's pyramid the only one at Giza that still has its smooth cap? The casing is Tura limestone: a fine white stone quarried on the far side of the Nile and ferried across. All three pyramids were once covered in it. Most of it was stripped in the Middle Ages and reused in Cairo's buildings, especially after an earthquake damaged the city in 1303. The stones near Khafre's tip were the hardest to reach, and they're still up there.
