Did you know muon tomography was invented for the pyramids?| In 1965 a physicist named Luis Alvarez put detectors in a chamber under Khafre, the second pyramid at Giza, and left them running for two years counting the cosmic rays coming down through the stone. He watched for the soft spots which would indicate there was a hidden room. During this project, he won a Nobel Prize for something else! The Six Day War shut the site down for a while, but he finally published his findings in 1970. He had covered about 19% of the pyramid and found…nothing. Nothing at all. 50 years later, three separate teams used muon tomography on Khufu’s pyramid and found a 30 m void above the Grand Gallery. What other ancient sites do you think need a second look? #Pyramids #Giza #AncientEgypt #Architecture #Archaeology
