I built and tested a LEGO Technic paper plane catapult!
Project Paper Plane Catapult
I've been thinking of building an aircraft carrier that can launch RC aircraft for quite some time, so the process has begun! The first step was building and testing a working catapult system that can launch RC paper planes, powered by a single POWERUP 4.0 module, from the deck of a ship. My catapult system uses a single LEGO RC Buggy motor that drives two wheels through a simple gearbox. The wheels "grab" the plane and accelerate it to takeoff speed in a fraction of a second, making sure it clears the deck and doesn't lose much altitude before pitching up and climbing.
The second step will be incorporating the catapult system in an old-school carrier ship. The carrier will most probably resemble old seaplane tender ships and the catapult will probably have an adjustable pitch angle, for optimized takeoffs.
After the second step is also complete, the sky is the limit...
Paper plane catapult specs :
Catapult system : 1x LEGO RC Buggy motor
Battery : 3-cell LiPo
Remote Controller : FlySky FS-i6 with 6-channel receiver
Electronic Speed Control (ESC) : Hobbywing Quicrun 880
Paper Plane specs :
Paper plane design : Slightly modified Nakamura
Power : 1x POWERUP 4.0 module
Controller : Google Pixel 6a smartphone
Footage was shot on DJI Action 2 (onboard), LG G6 smartphone (takeoff shots), and Google Pixel 6a smartphone (build process).
