From Childhood Trauma to VanLife: Why I Need This Freedom
I’ve lived in a van for over seven years - and for me, vanlife isn’t about travel, minimalism, or saving money. It’s about freedom, safety, and control.
Why does vanlife feel like home to someone who grew up unsafe? This is my story.
In this video, I share why vanlife feels like home to me as an estranged daughter who grew up in an unsafe household. I talk openly about childhood trauma, hyper-independence, cutting off family, and how living in a van helped me heal in ways a traditional life never could.
This is not a story about running away.
It’s about never being trapped again.
I talk about:
growing up with an abusive parent
why some adult children go no-contact
hyper-independence and trauma responses
why “forgiveness” isn’t required for healing
how vanlife gave me autonomy, safety, and peace
why freedom and safety are the same thing for some of us
⚠️ Content warning:
This video includes discussions of childhood mistreatment, animal harm, and thoughts of self-harm. I avoid graphic detail, but please take care of yourself while watching.
This video is for anyone who:
feels misunderstood for cutting off family
thrives in solitude or unconventional living
wonders why vanlife feels healing to some and unbearable to others
grew up learning that home wasn’t safe
There is no single right way to heal.
Some people heal by building roots.
I healed by growing wings.
If this resonates with you, you’re not alone.
And if you’ve ever judged someone for going no-contact - maybe this offers another perspective.
Thank you for listening. 🤍
