Are VanLifers Freeloading Off Society?
Van life often gets criticised as “freeloading” - using public water, dump points, BBQs, showers, and even power without paying council rates. But is that actually true? In this video I break down how public infrastructure is funded in Australia and whether van lifers are really taking advantage of housed people.
After more than 7 years living in a van, I’ve heard plenty of accusations that van lifers are exploiting the system - using free public amenities while homeowners pay council rates. But the reality is more complex.
Public infrastructure in Australia is funded through a mix of council rates, state and federal taxes, tourism funding, and government programs. At the same time, van lifers still pay GST, income tax, fuel taxes, and contribute to local economies across regional towns.
In this video I explore questions like:
• Are van lifers freeloading off society?
• Who actually pays for public amenities like dump points, BBQs and beach showers?
• Was modern infrastructure designed only for people living in houses?
• And should public systems adapt to more mobile lifestyles?
Van life also raises interesting questions about mobility, technology, and how societies are structured. For most of human history humans were mobile, but modern systems assume people live at fixed addresses. With remote work, portable power, solar panels and mobile internet, location independence is becoming possible again.
So are van lifers really taking advantage of the system - or simply participating in society in a different way?
