Biogeography and environmental pressures often force unrelated organisms to evolve identical morphological traits - a process known as Convergent Evolution. In this episode of Living Zoology, we conduct a comparative analysis of serpentine lineages across various continents to see how natural selection facilitates the origin of the same biological tools over and over again. We analyze the anatomical divergence behind the striking visual similarities of these species, examining why some elapids in Australia mirror the vipers of Africa, Eurasia, and Americas, and how the Colubridae family has independently produced "vine" specialists three separate times.
🔬 Species Featured:
• Burton’s Legless Lizard (Lialis burtonis)
• Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis) & Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus caninus)
• Death Adders (Acanthophis) vs. True Vipers (Viperidae)
• Common Krait (Bungarus caeruleus) vs. Black File Snake (Gracililima nyassae)
• Brown-banded Water Snake (Helicops angulatus) vs. Dog-faced Water Snake (Cerberus schneiderii)
• Vine Snakes: Oxybelis, Thelotornis, and Ahaetulla
• Sidewinder (Crotalus) vs. Saharan Horned Viper (Cerastes)
