Hidden in the middle of the Indus River in Pakistan is Sadhu Bela, a Hindu temple complex spread across an entire island near Sukkur. The religious centre was established in 1823 when the Udasi saint Baba Bankhandi Maharaj settled on what was then a forested island called Menak Parbat. Over time, it grew into a major pilgrimage site with nine temples, gardens, a library and accommodation for pilgrims. The main temple complex dates largely to the late 19th century, including a major temple built in 1899. What makes Sadhu Bela particularly fascinating is its connection to the Udasi tradition, which has roots in the Sikh tradition while incorporating Hindu devotional practices. Today, it remains an important Hindu pilgrimage site in Sindh and one of the most amazing religious sites I've visited in Pakistan.
