Should You Take Free Stuff in Pakistan?
Pakistanis are incredibly hospitable, and there’s a beautiful concept called Mehman Nawazi (مہمان نوازی), which means hospitality towards guests. When someone offers you free food, a free ride, or refuses to accept payment, they often genuinely mean it. It’s their way of welcoming you and making you feel at home.
But what should you do when the person offering something for free is a rickshaw driver, taxi driver, or small shopkeeper who works hard to earn a living?
Personally, I believe in thanking them sincerely while explaining that their hard work deserves to be paid for. Sometimes, accepting their hospitality is the right thing to do, and other times, insisting on paying is my way of showing respect for them.
The important thing is to understand that Pakistani hospitality is often genuine, not a trick or an obligation.
What do you think? Should foreigners accept these generous gestures, or insist on paying? Let me know in the comments!
