Each morning, workers gather in designated spots, often carrying the tools they need, and wait for contractors or other people looking for workers to stop and hire them for the day. It’s a simple system that connects people looking for work with those who need extra labour, with workers typically paid a daily wage depending on the type of work and their skills. I came across these roadside labour markets while travelling through Pakistan and found it fascinating to see how people find work in a very informal economy.
