In retro-future LA, Andrea, a lonely roboticist, neglects her life to finish her masterpiece – IRIS the robot. While teaching IRIS the ropes of being sentient, she realizes she must patch things up with her Father. By giving birth to artificial life, Andrea learns how to live a real organic life. Her life is intensely focused on building her master robot IRIS – the first robot with real human emotions. Her father, Carlos lives a life of regret across town having lost contact with Andrea. She even forgot the anniversary of her mother’s death. Andrea has hit a snag with IRIS. IRIS is alive but the emotion isn’t flowing. Andrea has a hard time explaining emotion to the robot because her emotional life is so blocked. IRIS has an idea. To fully understand the human condition, Andrea needs to reconnect with Carlos. They make a trip across the city to commemorate the death of her mother. Andrea gets her emotional connection back with Carlos and IRIS finally understands human emotion. To program an emotionally connected robot, Andrea needed to become an emotionally connected human. 🎬 Director’s Statement: The theme for this project was "togetherness," and it means everything to me. Family is everything in Latino/Latina culture, and Reprogrammed is based on my fear of losing people as technology becomes more and more the focus of our lives.
