Make a Retro Horror Game From Scratch in Unity — FULL COURSE | Part 4 Welcome to Part 4 of my full step-by-step course on making a retro horror game from scratch. In Part 3, we built the foundation of our interaction system, added raycasting, created responsive crosshairs, locked and unlocked doors, and set up our environment skybox. Now it's time to build the backbone of our entire game architecture. In this part, we set up the core systems that handle game state, audio, story, and objectives: Game Manager, Dialogue Manager, Audio Manager, and Objective Manager. Along the way, we also break down essential C# fundamentals like Enums, Classes, Coroutines (IEnumerator), string interpolation ($), and two programming habits that make your game development workflow much faster. We are continuing to build BAYMAX — The Mad Dog step by step, with the goal of eventually turning this project into a complete retro horror game that can be published on itch.io. 🧩 PART 4 — WHAT WE'LL DO In this part, we will: • Discuss if game dev is truly worth it • Create an Objective Manager to track quests and player goals • Build an Audio Manager for sound effects and atmosphere • Learn what a For Loop is in C# and how to use it • Create a central Game Manager to control game states • Build a Dialogue Manager to handle text, timing, and subtitles • Understand Enums and how to organize clean game data • Understand C# Classes and how they save massive amounts of time • Learn how IEnumerator and coroutines work for dialogue flow • Learn why developers use string interpolation ($) before text • Connect all managers together cleanly These systems will give your project a clean, scalable structure, making it easy to add new rooms, story events, and gameplay mechanics without breaking existing code. As the course continues, we will keep building the game step by step, adding more atmosphere, mechanics, and story elements until BAYMAX — The Mad Dog is completely finished. 🎮 PLAY MY OTHER RETRO HORROR GAME Want to see another retro horror game I've made? We're ending with a finished retro horror game published on itch.io. Everything in between is the journey.
