Chapters
Did you know that Wolves actually domesticated themselves? For decades we were told humans captured wolf pups and tamed them into dogs. Current genetic and behavioural evidence suggests a different process: **self-domestication.** Chapters: 04:60 - - Chapter 4 : Domestication Happened More than Once Between roughly **15,000–40,000 years ago**, certain Late Pleistocene wolf populations began exploiting human camps as a new ecological niche The least aggressive, least fearful wolves: • Tolerated proximity to humans • Fed on discarded carcasses and waste • Gained a survival advantage • Reproduced more successfully Over generations, natural selection favoured reduced fear, lower stress reactivity, and increased social tolerance. Those behavioural shifts drove physical and neurological changes — creating the first proto-dogs. This was not a single event. Archaeological and genetic evidence suggests **multiple domestication events in different regions** of Eurasia, which helps explain why the following breed groups are so unique and different: • Arctic spitz-type dogs • Desert sighthounds • Early livestock guardians and camp dogs Only later — especially during the Victorian era — did humans intensively breed dogs into the 400+ modern breeds we see today. In this Animal Watch episode, Anneka examines: • The Late Pleistocene wolf ancestor • The science of self-domestication • Why humans tolerated wolves • How mutual benefit shaped evolution • And why modern dogs still retain core wolf behaviours Domestication was driven by **natural selection acting on behaviour**, not by humans deliberately “creating” dogs at the start. The wolf did not become the dog through force. It adapted itself.
