The Norwegian Elkhound was loved by both Vikings and Norwegian villagers. Said to have originated 5000 years ago from primitive dogs, these ‘wolfdogs’ also possess DNA of a female wolf mating several thousand years back making them carriers of recent wolf blood compared to many other dog breeds. These feisty and plucky hunting dogs are used by hunters to chase elk, moose, deer and bears down. The grey variety is very vocal and runs on ahead off leash where as the quieter and smaller black variety are used to track on leash. These dogs can be same sex aggressive and need loads of training and stimulation to keep happy. They may look small and fluffy but they have a heart of a Viking. Tonight we bring you the Norwegian Elkhound episode on YouTube channel Animal Watch direct from the Norwegian Fjords of Nordfjordeid where I board the Myklebust Viking Ship, the largest ship to ever be found alongside my crew of Vikings to explain the history, character and workability of these powerful and driven hunting dogs. I’ll also be interviewing top outdoorsman and athlete @kenstornes with his beautiful dog Ronja. Tonight at 7.30pm uk time on YouTube channel Animal Watch.
