How Hungary Lost Democracy

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Hungary was considered a promising young democracy – almost a model for others to follow. Today, little remains of that promise: since Prime Minister Viktor Orban came to power in 2010, the country has seen a gradual dismantling of the rule of law, freedom of expression and democratic institutions. Some are now openly toying with the idea of kicking the country out of the European Union. But is that even possible?
