Under Adolf Hitler’s direct orders, the Third Reich attempted to claim the Crimean Peninsula not as a military outpost, but as a mystical, German utopian colony named "Gotenland." Weaponizing the ancient history of the Ostrogoths through the 16th-century linguistic discoveries of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, as well as the very real 18th century German migration to Catherine The Great's Russian Empire, Nazi ideologists like Alfred Rosenberg claimed historical "rights" to the land to justify the immediate ethnic cleansing of millions of Crimean Tatars and Slavs.
