Along the coast of the North Sea lies a distinct nation of nearly 3 million people with its own language, sovereign legal tradition, and historical borders. Yet, it appears on zero modern maps because, today, it doesn't exist as a country. It's instead carved up between the Netherlands, Germany (and at one point Denmark). In the past, Frisia maintained total independence for centuries, defying feudal kings, vast empires and defeating Viking raids; Operating Europe’s first true peasant democracy under the "Frisian Freedom." So what destroyed their independence? And if Frisia reunited today as a sovereign European state, how would its economy and strategic coastline reshape the continent?
