In Today's Episode:
In September 1950, a Navy ship sat in the fog off San Francisco and quietly sprayed a cloud of bacteria over the entire city. 800,000 people breathed it in. Nobody was told. The government called it a test. Patients started showing up at Stanford Hospital with an infection doctors had never seen before, and one of them, a proud Irish immigrant in for routine surgery, died from it.
This is Operation Seaspray. It's the story of how the Army turned American cities into a laboratory for 20 years, the little red bacteria they picked because it was easy to count, the grandson who found out the truth 26 years later on the back of a newspaper, and the seven words buried in US law that mean you can't do a thing about it even when the government abuses its power.
Nobody in this story thinks they're the villain. That's the scary part.
