In Today's Episode:
We’re talking about a reel of audio tape that sat on a shelf for seventy-four years with the voice of the man who ran the government’s UFO program on it.
His name was Captain Edward J. Ruppelt. He was twenty-eight years old, he had two Distinguished Flying Crosses out of the Second World War, and in March of 1952 he stood up in a room in Boston and told a group of officers and technical people what the United States Air Force actually knew about flying saucers.
Eight hundred cases on file. 20% couldn't be explained.
The Pentagon put the tape online in September. About halfway through it, the same man who had spent twenty minutes carefully admitting everything he couldn’t explain starts describing an arrangement he’d made with LIFE magazine to try and control the narrative around UFOs.
