12 Valve Cummins Expedition Truck, Gets the Worlds Last Factory New NV4500 Transmission.
This truck has proven its self time and time again. The first half of its life as a logging outfit service truck, and now the Expedition truck. She's been my home now for two years, she's lived in the alpine and by the sea. She has traveled to the northern most point of vehicle accessible land in Canada, and her story is really just beginning. I could not be happier with the performance and capability of this truck, especially being my first build, but all of these miles have not come without their fair share of breakdowns. Any vehicle that sees the miles and abuse like this old girl does will certainly have breakdowns, but what makes this rig so special is how it can be fixed, and remarkable how it can continue driving even when things have failed.
This past summer we drove to the top of Canada to set foot in the Arctic Ocean, and remarkably there was no sign of any issues within the drivetrain. Coincidentally, the signs of a failure began to appear once we were back home and close to the shop. I am lucky enough to have some great support with Destination Adventure, and it wasn't long before a proper diagnosis was given, and the hunt for a new transmission was on. Once again, due to the amazing DA community, I had a connection with a gentleman that just happened to have a brand new, from the factory NV4500 transmission. These transmissions have not been in production since 2012, so for me it was the ultimate "barn find".
I have had the transmission out of the truck once before to replace the clutch system and flywheel, but this was the first complete removal, and for a couple of rookies I would say it went pretty darn well. The new transmission feels and sounds very good, and we should have years/many thousand km of trouble free travels to come.
This project did not happen without a fair bit of support from the DA community, and I am very thankful for everyone that chipped in. Weather it was a tool, a piece of advice, a busted knuckle, some welding or an entire transmission, it was all necessary to complete the task. Thank you all so much.
