Turandot: Christopher Tin Finale - Score Video with Composer Annotations

This score video shows how my librettist Susan Soon He Stanton and I tackled the challenge of completing the greatest unfinished opera of all time: 'Turandot'. My music leans heavily on thematic development, utilizing Puccini's leftover sketches, themes from the completed portions of the opera, and my own themes, which are often composed using Puccini's melodic techniques. It ends with a long-anticipated choral reprise of "Nessun Dorma", interwoven with Turandot's pentatonic "Mai nessun m'avrà" ("None shall have me") theme from Act II, signifying the long-awaited unity of Turandot and Calàf under the banner of love. Meanwhile, Susan's libretto introduces a few new plot twists that drive us to a more dramatically satisfying (and logical) conclusion, which makes both principal characters more three-dimensional, and their ultimate love more justified. Completing Puccini's final opera was one of the most challenging commissions I'd ever accepted. Thanks to Washington National Opera and Francesca Zambello for entrusting me with the task.
