People, today I am on Russia’s easternmost border, on Iturup, largest of the the Kuril Islands located really close to the Russian - Japanese border. Russia has a maritime border with Japan, and Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, is literally a stone’s throw away from here. The fact is, official Tokyo does not recognize these islands as Russian to this day and refers to them as Japan’s “Northern Territories”. And for this very reason, a peace treaty has not been signed between Russia and Japan since as far back as World War II. How crazy is that? Today, about six and a half thousand people who live on these islands, are living a very interesting and unusual life.
This is Lyadov reporting on how people live on the island of Iturup.
