I tested 3 methods for consolidating iron prills into a single mass of iron. First, I tried melting the iron in a crucible in an open forge. The prills came together in larger masses but the crucible tipped over and they spilled out. Next I built a small furnace and tipped the iron in through the top. The iron melted or welded together quite well o the point that 2/3rds of the iron was in a single mass. For the last method, I got the remaining pieces and mixed them together in a wood ash paste, formng them into a single pellet. When melted in the forge however the pellet fell apart and the remaining pieces did not weld to the main mass. It also made a mess on the surface of the metal. Of the 3 methods the small furnace was best although the crucible method has potential provided it does not tip over during the melt. #PrimitiveTechnology #iron #handmade #engineering The ultimate challenge is seeing how far human ingenuity can go. The challenge is simple but strict: If I need a fire, I make a fire stick. If I need an axe, I shape a stone. Every hut is built solely from trees, mud, and rocks. I don't live in the wild, but I love discovering just how far we can go using only natural materials and human effort.
