Borrowed Book
Winchester #9
The "borrowed book" in this song and video refers to the graphic novel, EPILEPTIC by David B, which my friend Eric lent me and suggested I read. I thought it was moving and beautifully drawn, and somehow it slowly wound its way into this song. The images that appear in the chorus are from the Pantheon edition (2005). All other images are by me. Lyrics below:
Borrowed Book
All encased in condensation, a robe of fog
Fallen faces on the train on my way up north
So, we just let it go
Calling stations, I'll be waiting alone.
All unbathed and all unbraided
Calling out from the place I made for it
Not to say I can say I know where it's coming from or going, but
So, leave this alone
All unlabled so that no one will know
And so now: here is death and the devil and a cat in a suit
gathered 'round
And they prowl in the park in the dark and they sing and they speak
with no sound
But it's loud
And I cover my eyes and my ears but I can't drown it out...
And this is the window, no bigger than a thimble
that lets in the raincloud to wind through the windmill and
these are the words and the terms to puzzle it out
So no one's in doubt
That this is the candle that burns on the mantle for love
And so now: here is death and the devil and a cat in suit
gathered 'round
And they prowl off the page to my brain because I know what it is
to feel rage, and feel proud
of the things that remain, they drive you insane and pull you down
but allow for the kind of release
from those terrible things
that you render in ink
and the demonous snake
will let go.
