After removing all casting marks from the cylinder head, it was time to recreate a clean and uniform cast texture. To prevent any blasting media from entering the coolant and oil passages, I made covers for all openings and machined surfaces, leaving only the cast areas exposed. I used aluminum oxide F20 for blasting. It’s aggressive enough to remove all die grinder marks and create an even surface texture. At this stage, however, the finish is quite rough, actually a bit too rough. In the next step, I switch to fine glass beads as the blasting media. These smooth the surface and refine the texture. Finally, the head receives a light oil treatment followed by steel wool to achieve a freshly cast appearance.
