In this video we'll look at how I'm introducing stealth mechanics into my indie game, Farewell North!
Since I was a kid I've loved stealth games like Splinter Cell and Hitman, and more recently games like Dishonoured have scratched that itch. There's something about that genre that really just peaks my interest, and since day 1 I've been saying Farewell North would have stealth elements. It took a while to get to this part of the gameplay, but stealth is finally making its way into the game.
I'm still quite adamant that Farewell North won't have any combat mechanics, so it was important to find a way to integrate the stealth into the gameplay in a way that actually fits within the mechanics and themes of the game.
In this devlog I'll show you the main stealth gameplay loop, and explain how I'm thinking about stealth as a whole within the game. I'll also show you some effects I've been working on, and some behind-the-scenes in Unity where I've been working on vision cone that adjusts to the shape of the environment in real time. We'll also take a look in Blender at the new thistles I've added to the game, as they're the national flower of Scotland and hold special reverence here so I wanted to make sure they were included somehow.
Of course there's also an update on the animal activation mechanic from the last video as well. Your feedback was incredibly helpful, and there were some great ideas for how to solve this challenge. What I went with was a hybrid approach to the sensor and chain-reaction ideas, where the flock is broken down into smaller groups and each group has a primary sensor bird. Once this one's activated, the rest of the group comes to life!
Oh, and we're having a game jam! From April 10th to April 18th we'll be doing a small, low pressure game jam for the Discord community so head on over to Discord if you want to join in. There won't be rankings or judging, so it's a great chance to experiment and push yourself out of your comfort zone, or participate in your first jam.
Don't forget to like, subscribe and of course, wishlist the game on Steam!

Farewell North is my personal passion project, an open world adventure game about restoring color to a dark and desolate archipelago where all color and life has left. You play as a collie working alongside your human companion to explore, solve puzzles, evade monsters, and restore color to the islands.
