On the morning of April 6, 1862, 40,000 Confederate soldiers poured out of the nearby woods and attacked the encamped Union soldiers. The overpowering Confederate attack drove the unprepared Union soldiers from their camps and threatened to overwhelm the entire Union Army of Tennessee. By afternoon the Union had regrouped and formed a battle line, known as the “Hornet's Nest.” Repeated Confederate attacks could not break through this line. By the next morning the Union had been reinforced and launched a counterattack, overpowering the weakened Confederates. The two-day battle at Shiloh produced more than 23,000 casualties and was the bloodiest battle in American history up to that time. smoke effects by videoeffectch
