Finding the Story in a Landscape Painting

This blue boat catches my eye as I explore an island in Maine. It's beached at an odd angle above the high tide line. Not far away, a flock of birds gathers on the wires. As I paint the picture, I answer your questions about the gouache technique, the overcast light, and the composition. But I still wonder about the story of the sailboat, so I ask my friend Clayton Bright, who lives nearby, to explain. He says the boat was used to teach kids to sail. It became obsolete, but the valuable lesson of slowing down and appreciating the present moment—a lesson he learned from his grandmother—remains true. There were some good questions I didn’t get to in the video, so I answer them in a Substack post: https://open.substack.com/pub/jamesgurney/p/new-video-about-a-stranded-boat?r=n4b58&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true MATERIALS—GOUACHE AND CASEIN Cadmium yellow light: https://tinyurl.com/yc2rax4e Cadmium orange: https://tinyurl.com/ys77jj6e Permanent green pale: https://tinyurl.com/mrhmfajz Raw sienna: https://tinyurl.com/42a3z5zx Ivory black: https://tinyurl.com/ya4k5b7p Prussian blue: https://tinyurl.com/fw5dashp Cadmium red scarlet: https://tinyurl.com/mr2dw4cz Rose red: https://tinyurl.com/mth72639 Casein basic set of 6 colors: https://bit.ly/3EF4o11 Casein underpainting set of 6: https://bit.ly/3PDNcQ0 Titanium white: https://tinyurl.com/4n24p7vb OTHER SUPPLIES Pentalic Aqua Journal sketchbook: https://tinyurl.com/5akh8ffx Travel brush set: https://bit.ly/46fkdXY Water cup: https://amzn.to/2soTw2L Plein-air tripod: https://tinyurl.com/mryzzfx7 SKETCH EASELS Facebook Group | Sketch Easel Builders: https://www.facebook.com/groups/403006076777641 Video Tutorial | How to Make a Sketch Easel: https://gurneyjourney.gumroad.com/l/sketcheasel BOOKS: Life Lessons from Dinosaurs: https://jamesgurney.com/products/life-lessons-from-dinosaurs-preorder The Artist's Guide to Sketching : https://jamesgurney.com/products/the-artists-guide-to-sketching Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter: https://jamesgurney.com/products/color-and-light-a-guide-for-the-realist-painter-signed-by-james-gurney VIDEO TUTORIALS: "Gouache in the Wild" (Download on Gumroad): https://gumroad.com/l/gouache "Gouache in the Wild" on (DVD): https://jamesgurney.com/products/gouache-in-the-wild “Watercolor in the Wild” (Download) https://gumroad.com/l/watercolor BLOG POSTS WITH MORE GEAR INFO: Gouache Materials List: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2016/07/gouache-materials-list.html Watercolor Materials: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2014/08/watercolor-in-wild-materials.html THANKS J.
