A video for city, transit, and infrastructure enthusiasts!
Hey, I'm Daniel, and I love investigating cities and infrastructure all around the world with a bit of dry German humor!
This time, I'll show you 10 Things You Didn't Know about the I-285 Perimeter in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
1. You can literally drive in circles around Atlanta
I-285 is roughly 64 miles long and connects major radial highways like I-20, I-75, I-85 and GA-400.
2. The highway created its own vocabulary
Atlantans use ITP for Inside The Perimeter and OTP for Outside The Perimeter.
3. It was supposed to be a bypass
The loop opened in 1969, but development around the highway turned it into a destination itself.
4. Trucks are basically forced onto it
Through-truck traffic generally has to use I-285 instead of cutting directly through central Atlanta.
5. The traffic is kind of ridiculous
Especially on the northern Top End, where traffic volumes are enormous.
6. Spaghetti Junction is weirdly beautiful
The I-285/I-85 Tom Moreland Interchange has huge, almost symmetrical flyovers and some surprisingly elegant design details.
7. An airport runway crosses directly over the highway
Runway 10/28 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport passes over I-285.
8. Perimeter Pascual
Braves pitcher Pascual Pérez got lost on I-285 in 1982 and reportedly circled the Perimeter three times.
9. Atlanta is still rebuilding the loop
Major interchange projects include I-285/GA-400 and both I-285/I-20 junctions.
10. The future I-285 could look completely insane
The planned Top End Express Lanes and Eastside Express Lanes would add barrier-separated lanes, elevated sections and even more flyovers.
