With his third Sor single, Davide Dipilato tackles the Fantaisie and Variations brillantes, Op. 30, a piece that feels at once dramatic and intimate, grand without ever losing its warmth. It opens slowly, full of expectation, as if a theatre curtain were about to lift, and then the main theme steps into the light. From there the variations shift between hushed, inward moments and bright flashes of pure joy, carried by Dipilato’s talent for shaping a story out of contrasts of light and shadow.
Born in Milan in 1998, Davide Dipilato is among the brightest guitarists of his generation. He graduated with top honours from the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado in the class of Agostina Mari, took a Master of Arts at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano with Lorenzo Micheli, and went on to study at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena with Oscar Ghiglia. He became an official Knobloch Artist in 2023. Among his honours are First Prize at the Szeged International Guitar Competition (2022) and Second Prize at the Fernando Sor International Guitar Competition in Madrid (2023), a result that means a great deal for this series. His debut album Fantaisies & Études is dedicated entirely to Fernando Sor.
François-Joseph Fétis once called Fernando Sor the Beethoven of the guitar. Born in Barcelona in 1778, Sor trained as a classical composer and wrote operas, ballets and chamber music, bringing together the balance of Haydn and Mozart, the drama of early Beethoven and the melody of Rossini. He went into exile in 1813 and then lived a cosmopolitan life, admired as a virtuoso in Paris and London and known as far away as Moscow. His successful ballet Cendrillon revealed a real gift for orchestration and drama. Sor spent his final years in Paris, where he died in 1839.
