In this captivating journey, Danish journalist Karsten Kjær arrives in the vibrant and chaotic city of Calcutta (Kolkata), India, capturing the essence of daily life in one of the world’s most densely populated cities. The documentary opens with the arrival of a bustling night train packed with passengers, a glimpse into the heart of the city’s transportation system. Karsten settles into the iconic Fairlawn Hotel, a historic gem in the heart of Kolkata, where Mrs. Smith, the warm and welcoming owner, offers a unique glimpse into the hotel’s rich history. Viewers are introduced to the colorful mix of guests, including American tourists, while scenes of the city unfold outside the hotel’s doors. The film explores the vibrant streets of Kolkata, where rickshaws navigate the traffic-filled roads and the contrast between wealth and poverty becomes starkly apparent. Karsten encounters beggars, street vendors, and families living in the slums, all while exploring the cultural heartbeat of the city. He visits Hindustan Motors, where he learns about the iconic Ambassador car, a staple of Indian roads. The journey continues with Karsten experiencing the simple pleasures of life in Kolkata: street-side tea vendors, traditional laundry practices, and local markets. The grandeur of the city is also on display, with a visit to the Victoria Memorial, a symbol of colonial history, and the tranquil parks dotted with goats and everyday life.
