Nissan developed a paint that can keep your car cool, and it actually works! When sunlight hits traditional paint, it causes the paint molecules to vibrate and thus get hotter. But Nissan’s new paint adds in two different particles. The first particle reflects near-infrared rays from the sunlight, preventing it from causing the paint molecules to wiggle. The second particle is truly wild; when the surrounding paint molecules heat up, it causes a charge-imbalance on this unique particle. This is unstable, so the charges, shown in red and blue, are attracted to each other to return to a stable state. As these charges move, they radiate electromagnetic waves, which shoot out from the car’s surface. Put simply, heat is converted to electromagnetic waves, which then shoot out into space. Nissan parked two identically colored cars next to each other in the roasting sun, and found the new paint was able to keep the car’s surface 12 degrees C cooler, and the car’s interior 5 degrees cooler. What is the paint called? They kept it nice and simple: thermal metamaterial passive radiative cooling paint. From the media release: "Developed in partnership with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products, the paint incorporates metamaterial, synthetic composite materials with structures that exhibit properties not usually found in nature."
