Throughout most of history, the office of the papacy served as a beacon of morality for Christians around the world. But unfortunately, when you're a multi-millennia spanning institution, you're bound to end up with some unsavory moments of history. For as surprisingly progressive and ethical as some popes have been long ago, there are also those who achieved similar levels of horridness.
