I caught up with The Virginmarys backstage at 2000 Trees Festival for a chat about learning guitar, starting a band and the lessons that only really make sense after years of playing. One thing that really stood out was how important it is to keep guitar enjoyable when you're starting out. That's something I couldn't agree with more.
The Virginmarys have somehow figured out how to make just guitar and drums sound absolutely massive. Ali and Danny explain how they developed their two-piece setup, including splitting the guitar signal into a separate bass channel, octave pedals and compression — but also why 90% of that huge sound actually comes from how they play together and use dynamics.
We also get into playing behind the beat to make riffs hit harder, the songs that first got them playing, why keeping guitar fun matters, songwriting, Ali’s incredible rock voice and what’s next for The Virginmarys. Some really useful stuff in here for anyone who plays guitar or plays in a band.
