She Thought I was the Enemy, but I was their Only Hope
There is this species of swan that I find very beautiful, Coscoroba swans, to me they are the archetype of grace and beauty. I was thrilled when an owner of these swans asked me if I wanted to give some eggs a chance that were probably waisted. He explained that after the swans had started incubating, they had left the nest for several days. Once baby birds have started growing inside an egg, turning cold for too long usually results in the embryos dying inside the eggs. Therefore he wanted to remove the eggs to stimulate the parents to start a new nest. I felt really sorry for the parents to be taking away their eggs. I was also really happy when 3 of the eggs turned out to be still alive.
At eight weeks old, one of the chicks was all blown up and I immediately took it to a vet. After examination the only option was to wait and see. To keep it warm and quiet. It broke my heart when it went downhill quickly and it passed away in my hands.
Sometimes this happens, no matter what I do. Unfortunately not all animals in my care make it. I'm deeply moved when this happens and I wanted to also share this part with you.
Despite the heartbreak, raising these magnificent birds was an unforgettable experience. The video ends on a bright note—taking the remaining two, now almost fully grown, out for a swim alongside my canoe.
With Love,
Alwyn
